　　The images we pick up, consciously or unconsciously, from literature and history significantly control our sense of identity, and our identity ― our sense of ourselves as powerful or powerless, for example ― controls our behavior.
　　That is why black teachers have grown insistent upon their students' learning black history ― slave history, in fact. For slave history has two virtues: not only does it offer a picture of slavery against which one can measure the present, but it offers also a vision of struggle and courage.

倒置

not only が文頭に出たため、後ろに倒置（疑問文の語順）が起きています。意味的には変わりません。

日本語訳

　そういうわけで黒人教師たちは黒人の歴史、つまり実際のところは奴隷の歴史を、自分の生徒たちが学ぶことを強く勧めるようになったのだ。というのは、奴隷の歴史には２つの長所があるからなのだ。奴隷の歴史は、奴隷制度の姿を示しそれを使って現在を評価できるだけでなく、また闘いと勇気の展望も提供してくれるのである。
