　　If the condition of fatherhood has taught me one thing, it is the difficulty, if not utter impossibility, of passing on to my (1) offspring the lessons of my separate life. I found out, almost after it was too late, that my children weren't born to learn from my experience; they were born to learn from their own, and (2) any attempt on my part to substitute my perceptions for theirs was doomed to fail.

直訳すると
「私の認識を子供たちのものの代わりに用いようという、私の側でのいかなる試みも失敗する運命にあった」



日本語訳
父親になって分かったことがひとつあるとすれば、それは私が自分の個別の人生から学んだ教訓を子供たちに伝えることは、全く不可能ではないとしても、難しいということである。私はほとんど手遅れになった後で、子供たちは私の経験から学ぶために生まれてきたのではないということに気がついた。彼らは自分自身の経験から学ぶために生まれていたのであり、私の認識を子供たちの認識の代わりに用いようと私が試みたところで、それは失敗する運命にあったのだ。
